This is not a typical article for my food blog, but I want to share my experience with other cat owners. I am always looking for new ways to keep cats off kitchen counters and tables. Our cats’ names are Tabby Xena and Maincoon Leo, and they love to get on the table, especially when I’m making my food styling videos. I don’t have to wait long to find the moment when Xena is on the table (Photo before I found an easy solution!) Here is my experience and what works for us to keep our cats away from the table.

*We can buy motion-activated sprays, use foil or sticky tape on the counter, and it’s fine for athletic cats, such as our Xena. However, I don’t suggest using some of these methods with maincoons. They are large cats, and if they get scared and jump from the countertop, it is not safe because of their weight. The solution I see is only to make the surface uncomfortable and give a solution for observation of what is going on.

In the photo below, you can see how comfortable cats are lying on the table. I covered a glass table with a tablecloth for my video, and in seconds, they were on it, which is unusual for them to lie on. Xena starts to have a nap while modeling.

*From my life experience, I can say that all cats have different personalities and preferences. What works for most does not work for some. We had a Persian Siamese mix cat, Jacksor. Nothing worked for this boy to stop going to the kitchen counter at night, and there was no food! He goes to the kitchen counter every night to inspect it, no matter what. Foil, sticky tape, strong citrus smell, we try it all:) How do I know he inspected the counter? Every morning, I see his fine pieces of fur there.

1. Choose Plastic Uncomfortable To Be On Placemats

Cats don’t sit on the kitchen table if it is uncomfortable to sit on it. The solution to use plastic textured placemats. The photo is of our everyday placemats with a table setting. I changed the plastic to comfortable fabric placemats, and Xena jumped on the table immediately. This is a very effective way how to keep cats off kitchen tables naturally. Do you prefer fabric on the table? Next is an easy solution for fabric placemats to keep cats out of the table.

2. Dry Soap Solution To Keep Cats Out of the Table

I saw this easy idea on the Internet and tested it with our cats. The technique is simple: rub dry aromatic soap into placemats. I tested the table with this technique, and it works! Leo was not interested. However, Xena jumped one time and, after sniffing the placemats carefully, jumped out of the table instead off sit on it. She learned, and we never saw her again at the table. Why do I like this method? The soap’s aroma is not noticeable to people, and we can use it on placemats for everyday use.

Pros: Not every placemat may work because of the fabric quality and color, for example, red placemats. We need to repeat rubbing with soap from time to time.

3. How I Keep Away Cats From Table Or Counter When Making My Food Videos

This advice is not only for content creators, but also for all cat owners who like to cook. Cats are curious, and they want to see what we are doing on the countertop if they are not tired from other activities, of course. And when I start preparing food or making my cooking video, cats like to watch, especially Leo. Keep something around the countertop that they can lie on and easily see what’s cooking :). In the photo, we have a small beverage refrigerator next to the countertop. It can also be a cat tree.

*My advice about a good cat tree, especially if you have a large cat as a maincoon with strong claws. So many good cat trees on the market these days. My advice is to make sure they are selling replacement sisal posts for the trees. We bought our first Armarkat tree many years ago, and it was working so well for our maincoon Yogi, he loved it so much. But we didn’t know then that sisal posts could be replaced by ordering on their website and end up buying a second Armarkat cat tree after many years of use!
