I am going to share easy methods on this page and at the same time fancy ways to serve watermelon. These techniques make great watermelon centerpieces for the party table.

The heart-in-the-middle method is a very cool way to cut and serve watermelon. We don’t have to make a watermelon punch from the pieces left after cutting the shaped watermelon (check the video below) because no edible part will be wasted after we cut the heart! Two very important things that keep our family and friends happy at a holiday party – festive food and plenty of it! Cold and freshly cut watermelon is always a great dessert for any person, especially little ones! Follow my fancy-cutting watermelon tips and you are going to impress with success for sure! These are my favorite methods for cutting watermelon for the fruit platter. All techniques are easy watermelon designs and are not time-consuming or food art skills.

1. Creative Watermelon Slices for a Party Platter

This is one of my favorite ways to slice the watermelon for a party. The reason is that we make watermelon slices look good even if the watermelon has some very noticeable imperfections on the skin. Just a few simple steps, and a watermelon slice looks like a flower’s petal. So easy and impressive way to slice watermelon for a fruit platter or serve it as is.

In the photo below, I placed a margarita glass in the center and decorated it with orange slices cut in half and a cherry.

We Need

Watermelon

Chef knife

Citrus zester with loops

*Citrus zester is also called a “Lemon zester with loops and a channel knife”.

I tried other garnish tools, but the skin is so tough, and it is difficult to use them. For this purpose, the best way to make a design is to use a zester with loops.

Technique

1. Cut the watermelon in half horizontally. Then cut off the sides.

*If you would like to use a cookie cutter for decor, the order of the first cut will be slightly different. See at the end why.

2. Cut in half as in the photo below.

3. Cut the sides off as I show in the photo. It is not edible, and we add more color to slices for presentation. Our slices have not only green skin, but also white and red when we see them from the side.

4. I used a lemon zester with loops to make the design. Just straight stripes by length work the best. Then slice.

Arrange watermelon slices, starting with the larger slices and then the smaller ones.

2. How To Cut Watermelon With A Heart Inside

Photo How to cut watermelon

This is such a simple and impressive way to serve watermelon for a party! Most importantly, no waste of watermelon meat and easy-to-eat fruit for guests. We can cut without using any pattern in the center to a desirable shape. However, when we use a pattern, it will be so much nicer looking and have no mistakes. I tried without any pattern to cut watermelon at first, and I learned I personally need a pattern. Of course, if you have excellent knife skills and cut perfect heart shapes without any pattern, it will be much faster. This is one of the methods how to cut a large watermelon because we make a design inside. I am going to share the cutting watermelon trick, so we can make any design in the middle. It is definitely a creative way how to serve watermelon without much effort!

I made a flower in the middle instead of a heart in the photo below. To cut the watermelon into the shape of a flower, I use a cookie cutter as the pattern. In the center of the flower, I place a yellow circle made out of a cantaloupe.

We can make a variety of different watermelon cut-out shapes. The best way to cut watermelon for a themed party is that we can choose the design inside, from super simple to more detailed. Just a simple round shape inside for polka dots party theme as an example. Fun by using cookie cutters as a guide for other themes as well. The key is to use a simple pattern without many details on it. For example, I cut a watermelon with a butterfly in the middle and it took just a few minutes longer than when we cut the watermelon into wedges. I didn’t really have time to take photos, my family was waiting to eat this watermelon, so I took the plate outside and took the photo with a grass background. Really, a great technique how to cut watermelon for a picnic or garden party!

3. I place the pattern (bowl in shape of a heart) on the top of the watermelon. Stick in 2 skewers on the top and on the bottom of the heart. This way I can see where to place my heart when I turn watermelon upside down.

4. Turn watermelon upside down. Place the heart between the skewers and cut around the bowl. Keep the knife as straight as possible.

3. How To Display Watermelon Slices Easy And Cool Way

This method is definitely how to properly cut a watermelon and serve it fancy. I call it the proper cutting technique because everybody knows and likes it. Super simple but just a small change that makes the presentation so nice and also easy to eat for guests, which is important too. This technique gives us more possibilities to decorate our watermelon. I used a simple flower from a lemon in the center, but you can use other decorations as well. This is the simplest, coolest way I know how to cut watermelon for a party fancy just in 5 minutes.

*I always wondered why chefs use lemon on fruit platters at restaurants. I recently found the answer. One of the chefs on YouTube explained. Lemon brightens up the flavors of fruits, and even if nobody is going to eat it, lemon brings a beautiful aroma to the room.

Check out the technique, it is so easy and impressive! Great way to cut watermelon fast and fancy at the same time!

We Need

Watermelon Any size

Chef knife

Technique

1. Cut the watermelon in half vertically. Cut off the top.

2. Make marks before the cuts, so each wedge will be the same size and even number of the pieces. Cut the watermelon into wedges.

3. Here is the difference than I did usually before. Instead, open on the side each wedge, open every second wedge and first leave as is.

A simple way to elevate your fruit platter: I paired sweet watermelon slices with fresh mint leaves and an easy decorative flower carved from a lemon.

5. How To Cut Watermelon For Fruit Platter

Photo How to cut watermelon fancy way

I like this way to cut watermelon in fancy wedges because it is easy to eat and unusual interesting shape of the wedges. Some artistic people can make different varieties of skin shapes. My looks like fish shape watermelon slices. With this perfect carving trick, the wedges look much prettier on the plate than we just slice the fruit. We see more red on the platter visually and it makes much more attractive the fruit platter. I place it on the fruit plate with simple watermelon triangles instead of my fancy watermelon wedges to compare, so we can easily see the difference. To me, the photo of the fruit platter with watermelon above is much more fun and festive looks than just simple watermelon triangles! This is the same direction as for the technique of how to cut watermelon in triangles just with one extra step to remove some of the rinds. Check out this easy but at the same time perfect party trick!

6. How To Serve Watermelon For Kids On Sticks

Photo Fun For Kids Watermelon On Stick

A fun way to serve watermelon wedge for kids on a stick. We can serve any size of watermelon this way. Kids love ice cream and this serving idea is like ice cream serving just with a small difference, instead of ice cream we have a watermelon wedge on a stick.  Cold watermelon is a nice dessert choice for kids’ summer parties!

Wooden treat sticks are inexpensive and can be found in most grocery stores. We can buy in craft stores wooden sticks as well, even colorful ones. However, I personally won’t use sticks for crafts on my food, simply because they made not all made for food. In my tutorial photos, I use a whole stick in each wedge but on my fancy watermelon plate, I use halves. I like both ways but to use half of the stick is more economical and may be easier to eat for people with small hands.

  1. Cut a watermelon in half, I use a small watermelon. Slice the half watermelon into desired size pieces.

Fun Way Serve A Small Watermelon For Kids

A fun way how to serve a small watermelon for kids creatively is to make a turtle. I cut out of cantaloupe head, paws, and tail but we can make these parts of the turtle out of other fruits as well. The turtle’s eyes are blueberries. It took me a few minutes to turn just a watermelon into a cute turtle. We can make head, paws and tail in advance before serving watermelon. Cutting the watermelon into sticks takes just a minute. This is one more option how to serve watermelon in creative ways!
