Best Russian Pelmeni Mold: What to Look For Before You Buy

Pelmeni, traditional Russian dumplings with meat, are a delicious comfort food, but they can be time-consuming to make by hand. That’s where a pelmeni mold becomes a game changer. With the right pelmenitsa mold, you can speed up the process and achieve consistent, beautiful dumplings with much less effort. Even kids learn quickly; the pelmeni mold speeds up the process! I tried making pelmeni with my grandkids in all possible ways and tools, and the pelmeni mold is the winner. Based on my hands-on experience, I’ll share tips for choosing the best pelmeni maker to simplify your dumpling-making routine. Learn from my early mistake and discover which pelmeni mold is easiest to use, and deliver great results every time without stress.

1. Which The Best Pelmenitsa Mold To Make Pelmeni?

At first glance, the pelmeni molds in the photo above may look identical, but they are not. The difference between a great pelmeni mold and a frustrating one isn’t just color or a nonstick surface. It’s all in the design of the holes. I learned this the hard way. After moving, I misplaced my favorite stainless steel pelmeni mold and replaced it with a silver one, thinking all molds were the same. Big mistake! From the very first use, I regretted the purchase. While the silver mold technically works, the hole design makes it difficult to remove the dumplings cleanly and efficiently.      If you want to make perfect pelmeni without stress, the right mold makes all the difference. In this post, I’ll compare the two molds I’ve used and explain what to look for when buying a pelmeni mold.

What Is The Difference Between These Two Pelmeni Molds?

The difference between these two is the size of the rings each hole has. The ring depth makes a huge difference in performance. We can make practically pelmeni in both molds, but the dark pelmeni maker is much better!

In the silver mold, pelmeni became the shape of a kind of mushroom when we press, and it is not easy to take out. It is not as easy a process as the dark pelmeni maker to take pelmeni out.

In the good Russian ravioli maker, the ring is wider. Pelmeni come out much easier, and we don’t have to push them from the bottom of the mold because they are stuck there.

Freezing Tip for Pelmeni: To save space and freeze more pelmeni at once, you can stack 2 or 3 cutting boards on top of each other. I use small plastic sauce cups as spacers between the boards—this simple trick prevents the top tray from pressing down and squishing the delicate dumplings below. It’s an easy and effective way to freeze pelmeni without losing their shape!

*If you making pelmeni often and in large amounts (as a business, for example), check out freeze-dried trays. They have dividers and trays perfect for freezing pelmeni.
